Musical Paintings | Pictural Music

In his book “Perspectives on the Past” (1912-1922) the painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) says that he saw the lines and colors dancing in front of him for the first time while listening to the Lohengrin opera by German composer Richard Wagner. This was his revelation of abstraction. Bound by a strong friendship with composer Arnold Schoenberg, Kandinsky found a close relationship between the musical work and his paintings. He understood, in the early twentieth century, that music can help paint have its own language. A few decades later, the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) continued his "musical-pictorial" reflections. Mondrian arrived in New York in 1940 to escape the war that broke out in Europe. In his last paintings the symphonies and rhythms reflected ballrooms of the American metropolis, as we witness the composition of his work Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942-1943), the real shaping of an abstract musical composition. The reflections on the narrow and intimate relationship between art and music allign with the work of Eric Charles, alias egzo, whose pictural work is related to the world of music. If Mondrian was painting to the rhythm of the boogie woogie, it is hip hop that inspires the creative process of this Parisian artist who grew up in the West Indies. For egzo, everything is music. Moreover, music is the first to arise in the imagination of the artist. However, the notes quickly give way to lines and colors on the canvas, materializing rhythmic sound and movement. The musical impression and pictorial improvisation finally result in the composition of the boxes "xo [beat] box." After photographing his own paintings, as well as the work of artists that inspire him, such as Kandinsky, Picasso, Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, egzo transposes and remixes them, through the technique of collage. He paints and draws over empty cigarette packets, donated by friends or found in the street. These banal consumer objects, symbols of one of the greatest vices of contemporary society, have been appropriated by the artist. Egzo, following a pop approach, deprives packages from their original function, giving them an aesthetic status. By opening the boxes, they become real three-dimensional paintings, and we come to better understand the true circular and cyclical nature of the work of egzo. Indeed, inside, the viewer will find a code (QR) which, after being scanned and read by the specific application will listen directly on his own mobile phone a "beat" or musical rhythm composed by artist himself, causing the process of creating the "box" in question. In the work of egzo, music is both the starting point and the arrival path which has as intermediate step of painting. Inspired by the rhythm and texture of music boxes "xo [beat] box" are both a "musical painting" questioning the tradition of the two-dimensional painting, and the access portals to virtual reality digital music created by the artist. Evocation of the total artwork, authorized several times in the twentieth century, xo [beat] box involved in the demolition of the wall mentioned by Kandinsky in his Point and Line to Plane (1926). This wall separated painting and music, which egzo is bringing together.
